Record Sierra Snowfall Ends California Drought

An avalanche near Lake Tahoe left one person dead and another person seriously injured. The avalanche occurred near the Subway ski run at Alpine Meadows ski resort around 10:15 am local time, and search teams from the Placer County Sheriff's Office rushed to the area.

They found one male skier who had died but managed to rescue another skier who was badly injured. He was rushed to the hospital with serious lower-body injuries.

"Witnesses to the incident saw no other individuals involved, no additional individuals have been reported missing, and the search was declared complete at 11:45 am," the Sheriff's Office said in a statement.

The National Weather Service issued an Avalanche Watch for the Lake Tahoe area beginning at 7 am on Thursday (January 16).

"Periods of high avalanche danger may occur from Thursday morning through Friday morning," the weather service said in a statement. "Forecast heavy snow and high wind may result in widespread avalanche activity in the mountains."

The ski resort remains open, but the area near the Subway ski run is closed.
