The Real Reason Why LeBron James Should Retire

Listen to Dan Beyer of Fox Sports Radio, filling in for Doug Gottlieb on The Doug Gottlieb Show, explain to former NBA player Antonio Daniels why he thinks LeBron James should retire as soon as possible, and it's not for reasons that you would think.

Check out the segment above as Beyer tells Daniels that LeBron’s presence has become a perpetual distraction to the NBA, and sucking up all the air in the room and taking the spotlight away from other storylines during a time we should be strictly discussing the excellence of Jalen Brunson and Anthony Edwards.

Dan Beyer: “Kendrick Perkins said he thought LeBron should retire because it’s hurting his ‘GOAT’ argument. I actually feel the same way but for a different reason. I think LeBron should retire because I think he still takes up so much air in the room in the NBA. What does LeBron have to gain? I don’t think it tarnishes his legacy at all and I’m not even worried about the GOAT campaign, but here is my reason why I wish he would step away... It’s because you have Anthony Edwards and Minnesota last night taking care of the Nuggets – there is an opportunity for stardom. Jalen Brunson has four straight 40-point games, but somehow in the mix we always end up talking about LeBron and who is the next coach of the Lakers.”
Antonio Daniels: “That’s on the media, that’s not on LeBron. When was the last time we told a guy averaging 28 points per game to retire? Life is about perspective and what you’re choosing to focus on. You just referenced Anthony Edwards, and what the Minnesota Timberwolves are doing to the Denver Nuggets. If you choose to talk about LeBron, that’s on you. This is new for me. I’ve heard a lot of different conversations and debates about LeBron, but I have never heard someone say that LeBron James should retire because he’s taking up so much air in the room. It’s the ‘room’ that the media has put him in. What’s stopping you guys from moving on??”
Beyer: “The Office was great but when Steve Carell left and they started to bring everybody else in it just wasn’t the same anymore. It was time to move on and I kind of feel that way with LeBron. It’s too much drama. He’s unable to pass the torch to Anthony Davis. Because of who LeBron is he’s never going to be like ‘OK, it’s YOUR time’ because he’s LeBron James. It’s a gift and a curse with it. I don’t think the Lakers are in LeBron’s best interests. I feel like it’s ALWAYS about LeBron. They’re about to draft Bronny James with a second-round pick and he’s probably a talent that shouldn’t be drafted at all.”
