Mallory Swanson's lone goal led the United States Women's National Team to a win against Brazil in the gold medal game at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Saturday (August 10).
Swanson, 26, scored in the 57th minute to break a tie in an otherwise strong defensive match, finishing the tournament with a team-best six points and four goals. The Chicago Red Stars forward broke away on a long pass from Korbin Albert that was reviewed for offsides before being upheld by officials.
Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher provided a crucial save in the third minute of extra time to stop a would-be game-tying goal. Naeher finished the match with four saves.
The USWNT went undefeated in Olympic play to win their first gold medal since the 2012 London Games. The Americans fielded a younger, rebuilt team featuring several first-time Olympians including fellow forwards Sophia Smith and Trinity Rodman, both of whom served as the team's second and third leading scorers for Olympic play, respectively.
Saturday's match marked the last for Brazilian legend Marta, widely regarded as one of the greatest players in women's soccer history, who entered in the second half as a substitute.
