The Anatomy of a Comeback

The Toronto Blue Jays were just 8 outs away from being eliminated from the ALCS by the Seattle Mariners when DH George Springer belted a 3-run homer to take the lead and Doug Gottlieb saw it coming a mile away. It was actually the leadoff walk in the bottom of the 7th that signaled the start of the Blue Jays’ rally, illustrating exactly why walking the first batter of the inning is considered a cardinal sin in baseball.

Doug Gottlieb: “Every late-inning rally in baseball seems to start with a walk. Like, that’s the cliché! That’s how it always happens… All of a sudden, 7th inning, (Bryan) Woo walks (the) first batter and I was like, ‘Ope, here we go, here we go, here we go!’”
